LawyerX is the digital portfolio and public reference for Alex Gangatharan, a third-generation legal strategist practising across criminal matters and civil litigation. The site exists for a specific reader: the person facing a complex, politically inconvenient, or procedurally difficult file — the kind of matter that most firms decline — who needs to understand, quickly and plainly, whether their charge falls within this practice and what the consequences may be before they ever pick up the phone.
Alex read for his LLB at the University of Cambridge and took his LLM at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University. He came to the law with an engineer’s mind, and he still reads a balance sheet and a witness with the same suspicion. His Cambridge papers — one arguing for the criminalization of Holocaust denial, later cited in parliamentary debate, and a companion paper on the ethics of assisted suicide — reflect a practice that treats law as an instrument of human dignity as much as a procedural craft.
The practice is built on inheritance as much as credential. A grandfather’s practice and a father’s caseload became Gangatharan Associates, a firm that has represented two Heads of State, four embassies in Sri Lanka, four international banks, three Sri Lankan local banks, and the first woman-owned law firm in the country. Today the work spans four jurisdictions — the United Kingdom, Canada, Sri Lanka, and Singapore — with a focus on Toronto’s criminal courts and the multi-jurisdictional files nobody else wants.
LawyerX was built for a singular legal mind — Alex Gangatharan — a gentleman who never seeks attention, yet is someone you can count on, who does not leave even in the worst of times. It is a reference, not a solicitation: every section number, maximum, and mandatory-minimum status should be re-verified against the consolidated Criminal Code before reliance, and nothing here is legal advice.
